I think they just wanted to keep the Matamp aesthetics, they are not exactly known for being the most practical amps.
Think it would be building it in a case/chassis they are already geared up to make.

You should have seen the size of our Mr Entwistle's pre amp:While I enjoy the good Bassmec's humour and enthusiasm I can see no point in a pre-amp the size of a 100W amp. As for the car, what else should you expect from an Ox!!!
Now that is properly big, he had it custom built into a mixing console format by this frightfully nice German engineer chap called Peter Struven.
Hi guys i own the matamp preamp and there are some sound clips on youtube. It is in a mini matamp box. This will be the only preamp they make as the rest will have a digital power section so you can use it as a mini amp or flick a switch and it's a tube d.i. only with the point to point for the d.i.
