Matt Bissonette

Matt is drummer Gregg Bissonette's brother and his work on Gregg's solo albums is sublime. He is extremely musical and plays various styles with ease and taste. He had an album out about a decade ago with a band called The Mustard Seeds that was great psychedelic pop/rock. He recently toured with Joe Satriani and played on some of his recordings. Yep he's a great player!

I saw him once with Joe Satriani, he proved himself to be quite the groove machine! I was bummed at not seeing Stu Hamm, but Matt really layed it down. Big thumping grooves, the occasional melodic foil to Satch, very cool!

Mind you, the next time I saw Satch was with Dave laRue. man, that was a show.

I saw Matt playing with Dave Lee Roth filling in for Billy Sheehan. All I can say was Matt strutted about like a rock god - however his playing was only adequate and he made no attempt to play any of Sheehans great licks . He did a good job of holding down the bass lines, oh and posing. (as you can tell I was very miffed that Billy was not on the gig )

I know exactly how you feel (missing Stuart Hamm). However, he comes and plays these gigs, filling the biggest of boots.

I think Matt and Greg also did a lot of the musical links between scenes on "Friends" as well. That's the only work of his I know and his tone on those short clips is great.

I shot him an email question and he mailed me a pick and a copy of his band's CD, Raising Lazarus. It's one that's in constant rotation in my car.

I met Greg the other week at Music Live in Birmingham, UK. Only briefly mind you. I complimented him on his drum clinic I watched. Did you know that Greg is the voice for Disney's Winnie The Pooh?

I got the list from his website to clue some folks in to what he's done.

I also think his compositional skills are great. He wrote the music for Gregg's solo stuff and it's very contagious stuff.

I was watching one of the G3 DVD's with a buddy of mine yesterday, and had a bear of a time trying to figure out what kind of bass Matt was using. Anybody have any ideas? I found this picture of it, though it's a small pic:
