MB210 smells when cranking volume

to be honest i wasnt expecting anything other than using the knobs put on by the manufacturer. I wasnt trying to comepte with anyone i figured 3/4 was within the parameters of use on this unit. like i said everything else was flat i wasnt trying to push limits, to be honest the cones didnt look to be getting pushed that hard, my fearful 12/6 had more excursion with 180 watts driving it. I was actually suprised of the vid someone shot, my bass cut in pretty loud. when we did sweet child my bass was just as loud as the leads. I planned on buying a 210MBE but im waiting to see if i have a job as of june 2nd before dishing out any more money.

At 3/4 one bass can give you full output and another less than half that. It depends on how "hot" the different basses are. The master doesn't cut wattage.

A fearful is designed with high Xmax drivers in a vented cabinet. The cone will move more.

As for the job - I'll be thinking of you. I hope things go well.

Id call GK. This is the first Ive read of a smell coming from one, so its not normal.

The amps have a limiter on them, so if you push them too hard and they start to clip, it shuts itself down. People on here have clipped them or posted videos of them clipping. You need to push it pretty hard to get it to clip.

What EXACTLY are your settings? You mentioned 3/4 master and low gain with the EQs around noon. Exactly where is the gain and where is the "boost".

Ive never had to turn up the master volume on my MB210 past 1:00, but if the amp isnt supposed to go 3/4 volume, then why make a master volume knob which can turn all the way to 3/4.

And you said you are using a passive bass into the passive input, so you arent sending it a hot signal. If you gain is below noon and your boost is below noon, then I think theres something wrong because your combo should easily be able to handle gain at noon, EQs at noon, boost at noon, and master at 3:00 (3/4 volume).

You said you usually use PA support, so Im guessing this isnt a brand new MB210 and its been played awhile and is broken in.

While yes, I understand the logic some people have posted about pushing it too hard or expecting too much out of a 210, but from my experience gigging with the MB210 with a 6 piece band for a year without running an extension cabinet, and your settings, you should have been fine at those settings.

gain and boost are about 1-2 almost nill like i said wasnt trying to push it. pickups were fender jazz mim passive pickups. ive had the amp probably 8 months?? playing it a couple times a week. but has always been about 25%-50% on the master depending on the venue so i can hear myself, all the other settings the same as this show. limiter on tweeter off

ohh and i bought it used from here. dunno if it still is under warranty, was when i first got it because I took it in because a ground came loose during shipping and they said they checked everything else out in that service repair.

Im glad I asked where gain and boost were. I normally kept mine around 9-10:00 on both. At 1-2:00 thats about 60% on the gain and 60% on the boost, and then 75% on the master volume. Thats a good amount of juice coming through the 210.

I think the loudest I ever went with it was Gain at 12:00, Bass 10:00, lo mids at noon, hi mids at 1:00, and treble at noon with boost at 9:00 and master at 1:00.

Since the amp didnt clip, I still think that you werent pushing it too hard.

I would troubleshoot a little. Keep your exact gain, eq, and boost settings, and play with it at the master around 50% and see if the smell comes. If the smell still comes, then thats not normal because everything around 1-2:00 should not result in the amp overheating.

Id still call GK. I think Bob was on here at one point and stated there was a 3 year warranty with these. I dont know if its transferrable, but GK should be able to tell by your settings and the smell if you were pushing it too hard, or if there is another problem.

not 1 and 2 oclock 1 and 2 on a scale of 1 - 10 i.e. 7 oclock

I know this an old thread, but I just wanted to post a note about the gain settting mentioned in case anyone else trips over this as I did.

With my MB210 DId into my home mixer, to get a decent signal level to the desk I need to run the gain at around 2 O'Clock (The DI is post gain, not pre as indicated in the block diagram in the manual!).

With this in mind, is it possible you are running the gain too low and underworking the preamp and overworking the power amp to get the level you want?

I would try turning up the gain and reducing the master.
