I am playing at the Big Ears festival tonight and earlier I got a chance to catch Christian and Edgar’s set which was just great. Christian bows quite a bit and has a beautiful sound. It was really interesting to observe their different sounds and concept. Christian is absolutely thunderous but I still have to say that Edgar is otherworldly. I was quite surprised how well Edgar’s pizz sound held up against Christian’s massive tone. Masters at work.

I just played the CD today. It is incredible, beautiful, pure, uncompromising work. 66 minutes!

I’ve listened to it about 30
times so far myself and feel similarly - can’t get enough. I particularly love when Christian takes to the piano and features Edgar in that capacity. You can tell he really brought his A game trying to stay true to the language in the context (polka dots quote in bewitched, etc). Well done!!

I presume they got the idea from the Rufus Reid & Michael Moore albums from the 90s? Those were great.

I've been listening the last couple days. I think the weakest tracks are the jazz standards, but there are some really great original tunes in there. The appalachian/bluegrass meets jazz flavor is like chocolate and peanut butter. They groove really tightly together, no matter who is leading or playing arco. I don't think anyone else could have pulled this off.

Those were great, however Bottessini wrote bass duos in the 1800s. The first jazz/improvised bass duo LP was this one, in the 70s:
