I just started jamming with a drummer and two guitarists a few weeks ago and Im just not getting anything out of it. I dont know if its them or me but wanted to ask for your guys opinion.
Drummer Good rhythm. I can lock in with him easily, he can jam on any rhythm Im playing and I like the sound of the drum and bass alone more than anything else. No complaints at all with him.
Guitar 1 This guy plays a lot by himself and just with a drummer. He has virtually no theory (not that I have much more) and does not follow any progression. He just plays a riff and moves it all over the neck. He has a good sound a good sense of rhythm but when asked what chords or progressions hes playing, hell respond Im just playing every other one, which means hes just moving the riff every other fret which doesnt follow what the other guitar or I am doing. When I ask him to tell me what hes playing and when hell tell me I dont even know what Im gonna do, just play how can I play to that?
Guitar 2 This guy knows a decent degree of theory and understands what chords hes playing and what progression hes using. The problem here is that hes so out there that he explains things so quickly and in a non-logical manner and will give me 4 different parts of a song but not really piece them together in a logical order so I dont know when hes going to play each part (or how many times hes repeating a riff). Hes also really impatient and needs to play all the time, even when hes explaining something so its very hard to concentrate.
Id like to be able to jam with some guys and feel good enough to go with anything. These guys seem to have very little structure and even when they have structure, its only with certain pieces and not everything. I find it hard to play along with them because I dont know what to play or when to play it (when theyre moving and where theyre moving to). Am I way off here or whats the deal?
