Measuring for tuners

I apologize in advance for the simple question--on the plus it should have a simple answer.

I want to replace the stock tuners in my bass with Hipshot Ultralights, which come in two shaft sizes as far as I can tell. I'm not clear on what measurement I should take when selecting, though. Should I be measuring the diameter of the hole, or the diameter of the peg shaft (it doesn't fill the hole snugly.)

Measure the diameter of the holes, that way you will get the right size ones to fit tight in the holes.

Thank you. That what I had expected, but it was my first time removing a tuner and I was surprised to find that the tuner shafts weren't fitting snugly into the holes.

and there are two standard tuner hole sizes - 9/16" and 11/16" ...

the 9/16" hole is for the 3/8" tuner
the 11/16" hole is for the 1/2" tuner
