Tried looking in the archives, but might be wording it wrong. When measuring the speaking length or ball end to silk, is the ball end included in the measurement? I have a bass that is right at 34" to the nut, and even though the ball end is rather small, that amount of length could open up a much wider range of strings available to use on that particular instrument. I know that silk windings can vary slightly due to human involvement, but knowing whether the ball is included could give me enough info to decide if I want to take a chance on trying out a new set...

It depends on the manufacturer. As far as I know, most published measurements include the ball end itself, but some are measured from the top of the ball end.
The difference usually works out to be 0.25".
