Double Bass Meisel Geiger

Geige is indeed "violin" in German, but there are American made basses with the name "Geiger". Voigt & Geiger, Leroy Geiger, etc. Known especially for thin ribs. Stretching way out on a limb here, I think what you are looking at is a Geiger inspired design made for Meisel. I played one once, about 20 years ago. I think it was a hybrid. I thought it pretty good for the money. I happen to own an original, thank you very much:):):)

Ehh. It's a mediocre plywood German bass made in a factory some time after the war. eBay being eBay the bidding will end over $800 which isn't a great deal for what that it is. Given that it has steel strings, I don't buy the seller's story that it hasn't been played since 1950.

If you're the high bidder, count on throwing another $500 at it in the near future for a new bridge, new strings, and setup work.

Or you could call Bruce Wallace and see what he has. His site, brucewallacebass.com, shows a used Engelhardt in good shape for $950 which is a fair price.

I've seen and played a few V&G basses and the one in the ebay ad bore no resemblance that I could see. I'd love to see your real deal V&G. The one I played at Bill Merchant's shop many years ago was the loudest bass there!

Was it for sale or in for repair? If the latter it might have been mine! I have some pics somewhere. I´ll put them up If I
find them.

I can't find my pics, but I found this thread from 2003.
Rib depth and sound (hello Luthiers)
If you scroll to reply #26 there are two pics of a bass that looks identical to mine.
The text was:
Here are some pictures of a Leroy Geiger bass that was
used in the sound sudios of hollywood for 40 years.
This one has rib depth of about 5.5 inches, but a fairly
normal 3/4'ish string length, and a narrow neck.

They do play very nicely.

I think it was for sale. Probably around 2005.
Not mine then. I bought it in maybe´93 and had Bill do a fingerboard and neck reset around then. The bass has been with me in Germany since 2002. Ironic that a bass made by German trained luthiers in working America would eventually end up back in Germany!
