I had a Buster 15 combo, donated it to my kids school when he joined the jazz band, as they did not have a bass amp worth a damn. The music teacher eventually cleaned out the music closet and gave my son a working bassman 10 (50 tube watt amp with 4 10inch speakers. I kept the D-180 to give to my son as he is a big Metallica fan. I eventually moved on from Mesa amps. I bought an ash down 100 tube amp with 15" British bass cab, and then I got my current rig. I ordered a Science Mother 200, and then I score a Sun 215 cabinet with 2 EVM15L speakers, and man, that is the sound I have been rocking for the last year! Don't miss any of my amps. The Science has 2 channels 1 clean, and 1 overdriven. they have an overlap between the 2 channels as far as drive is concerned. I also have a mesa diamond prodigy, which I was going to drop off at mesa Hollywood until I found out they closed down the store, then even more bummed out they sold the company.
In any case to answer your question you can get drive out of the mesa buster, but it's not the kind with gravitas. It's home is clean, slightly driven tone.
