Mesa Boogie Walkabout head.

Hey, i own a Mesa Boogie Walkabout head(Love it and use it a lot)My cab SWR Goliath jr..My issue is at a gig it would not turn on i shook it a bit and boom it turned on.I left it on to heat up the tubes and within minutes there was a burning smell and it was burning hot.The 1st tech said it was the transformer Mesa said no. The 2nd tech found a few loose soldering posts and suggested that it was all due to the constant vibration.He did fix the problem.HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED TO ANY BASS PLAYERS USING PIGGY BACKS? BTW..The Mesa Boogie techs were excellent and eager to help solve the problem..

What is the difference between a combo and a piggy back amp? None. Amps are designed with vibration in mind, at least good ones are.

Generally vibration is not a problem, but I hesitate to confirm what the cause of the real problem because once a tech gets into a unit proclaiming that it's a bad transformer, who knows what else he might have done in the process.

I would rephrase that and say that designers do their best and test the units. But, mechanical failure from vibration is a tricky thing related to fracture, fatigue, and defects. You try to minimize the failures; but, it is hard to simply design them out.

I use the same combo: Mesa Walkabout head and a SWR Goliath Jr. iii.
It’s a great match imo.

Hope you get your amp issues resolved soon.

If it were me, I would send that sucker to Mesa quick.

I own a Walkabout head. A couple years ago I sent it to Mesa for a good "going through". They cleaned it, did some updates, and generally took good care of it. Customer service was great. Communication was great. The Walkabout is great.

At this point, too many hands have been inside that amp.... some more qualified than others. Let the guys who made it go through it.

I didn't know you could send something back to Mesa for a "freshening up". Good to know as my WA is getting up there (pre-2006, don't know the exact year).

To the OP, I would highly consider sending it back to Mesa.

Yeah the whole experience was great. And now I just don't worry about it.

Thx AH, good to know. Normally I do all my own work but my WA's precious to me and afaik, unmolested. I was lucky to have been able to get it when I did so in this case I'll put my ego aside and let the experienced pros do the work when the time comes.

I was thrilled with the service visit my WA received. it did cost a little, but was way more reasonable than I assumed....surely way less than a local tech would have cost.
