Hey Justin, I've been a really big fan of your playing for a long time and was overjoyed to see you posting on talkbass. I've been using the Titan v12 for about 5-6 months now and I'm loving it. I actually tried it out partially due to your recommendation. It seemed like the specs were exactly what I was looking for. I'm wondering if you believe that this head is best suited to any particular cab? Does the titan work better with the Powerhouse Vintage 810 opposed to the SVT 810's that you have. And are you a believer in brand matching? Meaning amp/cab combinations of the same company work best together? I've been using my Titan with an Aguilar GS412 and I've liked the sound, but have been missing a little bit of the quickness and punchiness of a 8x10. I think your and my ears work very similarly, so I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on this topic. Thanks for your time Justin. And a side note, how do you like the Overdrive on the Titan V12 compared to some of the Boutique drive pedals that you have? -Poon
I like the Titan with my Boogie 8x10 AND with my Ampeg 8x10 )) Nah, it sounds rad with either. No stress. You want more trad sounding? Go Ampeg. More hi-fi? Mesa. JMJ
sounds awesome! I just wanted to drift away for a second, but I wanted to see how you would compare your Mesa to your Aguilar DB 750 sound wise? thanks a lot, Tom
I haven't had a 400 + in years, but I sure would like one. Hard to remember the tone clearly enough to do a great A/B for you. But I'd say that it's easier to get a tone quickly through the Titan, because it sounds great just flat. And since the power amp is MOSFET, it has a quicker sound..the 400+ for SURE would have more personality, though. I do remember fiddling with the tone knobs a lot, but I also remember that the 400+ is one of my best live tones ever. JMJ
Similar Girth in sound. That's what I love about both of these amps. With smaller amps, I've felt like there is a "heft" in the notes that is missing, but both of these deliver in spades. These are the only two amps where I've felt like this with the notes regardless of power ratings. Both have insane headroom. Both have their inherent sound which isn't that far apart from each other. I did the tube swap on my DB750, which made the low end more controllable, respective to a DB750 with the stock tubes. I think overall the DB750 is a cleaner amp until you start pushing up the gain. The Titan V12 has an overall dirtier character, but I think is ultimately a little more versatile. The weight on the Titan is less which makes it awesome in my book. My Observation is I liked the DB750 better through my S810 and I liked the Titan more through the GS412.
