When she wants to be, there is no one funkier than MeShell.
I loved her first two albums and I like Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape too. Most of her other work has gone in directions that do not interest me very much, but I still respect her as someone who follows her vision.
Her live band is always tight.
Like Doc Cheese, I don't love every byway she's taken, but the authenticity, artistry, and tight band is a constant.

I really dig MeShell's later work. She wouldn't be an artist if she made Plantation Lullabies over and over. Her later albums offer their rewards with multiple listening. IMHO
I'm happy she won the Grammy for Best Alternative Jazz Album (which sounds like a weird category to me, but okay). I lost interest in her recorded output after Jamia but there's a bunch of stuff off her latest album that I like. I saw her perform a few weeks ago at the Blue Note in NYC and it was a fantastic show. Her band was, of course, super tight but what impressed me most was the dynamics. Even when playing really softly the groove maintained an intensity that I rarely hear. And her touch on the bass is just... magic. Such ease and confidence. Confidence to play the most simple line, and then make it feel like it's the most important thing happening in the room at that moment.

Seem to recall an interview where she said one of her greatest wishes would to be Prince's bass player - THAT is a combination I would have loved.....

In a more recent interview she mentioned that meeting Prince was a huge disappointment (of the “never meet your heroes” variety). I wouldn’t see their personalities meshing at all.

This is her super power, she can command a recording or the stage with even a simple line. Pino Pallidino is like that too. Playing wise, she is sort of a Anti-Mohini Dey. Not anti as in the sense of being against Ms. Dey, but in having an opposite approach and impact.

MeShell's feel is ridiculous same with Pino, Mohini says she is moving to Nashville, I wish she would detour to NYC for a bit.

Pino and Meshell are 2 of my favorite players. Mohini does absolutely nothing for me.

I like Mohini Dey although her shredding starts sounding the same to me all of the time.
I absolutely love the way Meshelll and Pino play. Pino can shred, but it is always in the groove. I’m sure MeShell can shred too although I have never heard play like that.
