Metal Bassists less respected?

No, I don't think he is. I think he's saying based on the way the guy has his hands positioned in the pictures, he doesn't look like a very good player. Yesyes, don't judge a book by it's cover (sigh), but I've never seen a professional player play with technique THAT bad.

I HAVE heard him, though, and it's alright (his tone overwhelms the mix, in my opinion. "Smile", anyone?), but nothing special.

In my opinion, who cares if "Metal bassists" or "X bassists" get less respect. I sure hope that's NOT what they're in it for. If so, they don't deserve it.

Not that in matters, but at least in metal's case, given that it's popular mainstream music, don't they actually get MORE coverage than "respected" bassists, such as Wooten (for a good example of one popular with kids and adults)? I don't know that it matters that some people don't consider metal as refined as jazz or classical, because they still get far more coverage in the presses!

Have you seen the ad in question? I said "IF" as in: If his technique is as bad as what he is displaying in those pix (and judging by his facial expressions he doesn't care if it is) then he doesn't deserve (mine at least) respect. He may be a monster player that was just screwing off, but judging from the pix and the fact he's in a band that Yamaha assumes is big enough to warrant an endorsment, yet, I've never heard of the guy, I doubt it.

I've played profesionally for 25yrs (I'm 37/I started very young) and although these days I play mostly Jazz, RnB and covers, I've played in every type of musical situation you can think of, including several HardRock/Metal bands. Every kind of music takes the right mindset to play properly. Metal may not get a lot of (musical) respect, but I've played with a lot of great Jazz and RnB players who would sound absolutely TERRIBLE in a Metal band because they just don't "get it". Its not always about how much Chops and Theory you have.

I'm not sure why you quoted my post, because your feelings to relate to or contradict what I said. I agree with you in the fullest, though whether you are arguing or agreeing with mine, I'm not sure that my first post correlates with it at all. :)

I guess I'm agreeing with the attitude that Metal should not neccessarily be looked down upon because its not as "refined" as certain other forms of music.

Man, I'm always telling people about this metal bassist named Tony Choy. He is absolutley amazing. He sounds like a jazzer in a metal band. If you want to hear some great metal bass playing, I suggest going and picking up the album "Elements" by the band Atheist. This guy is totally badass.
