actually its depending on the type of metal...


if you have a dense mix like say... cannibal corpse.. then you want lots of mids.. as Alex Webster states..


then on the other hand... Dave Ellefson says he scoops his EQ because in thrash metal the guitars has LOTS of mids.. thus making it pointless to try and cutthru with the mids..

There are many different bass tones (and guitar tones) in thrash metal.

scoop the eq on your bass. scoop the eq on your amp and engage the "shape/color/scoop" button. you'll be SO scooped that you'll actually cut MORE. you will take up the sonic space above and below the guitars.

also compress as hard as you can and tune to at least drop A.

seriously.. try to find a section of the mids that the guitars arent using and occupy it. if they are all low mid, then take the high mids and higher end of the lows. dont be afraid to tell them to cut their sub lows for the sake of the mix. it might sound weird alone, but with the band it will work.

unless you ARE the mix, as i used to be. then its all distorted mids and those 2 chumps trailing in my wake.
