Metal peice sticking out on bottom?

Hey guys,

I recently purchased a cheap 1980s Marlin Slammer (defretted) bass neck.

It has this metal peice sticking out of the bottom (pictures below) and I'm not sure what it is.

I'm just putting this neck on a cheap, two year old P Bass clone, and was wondering if this metal peice will get in the way, as I have never taken apart an instrument and I usually see flat screws on the bottom of necks.

i would say its the truss rod. so you will need to leave this free so you can adjust your neck after installing.

This peice won't stop me from installing the neck onto the body will it?

well no, every neck has a truss rod. they actually need it, so you can adjust the curvature of the neck. here is the wiki link:

usually you adjust them at the head, but some necks have the adjustment at the body. you´ll need to do a cavity for it though.

to me the, truss rod looks overextended and could interfere with the neck pocket of the body. I don't think this is normal, not positive though. Anyone?

That is a pretty normal adjustment style for a truss rod.

Whether or not it will fit depends on if the body is routed for it.

^^There's your answer. Bodies which are ready for this neck will have an extra recess routed to allow it to be in place and allow enough room for adjustment - as shown above.

Yeah it won't fit on a standard fender neck pocket unless you route out space for the extended truss rod nut.
