A couple weeks ago, I got called to do a country gig. I don't have a pickup, so I wrapped an SM-58 with some bandanas to increase the diameter of the head of the mic and to keep it from directly touching the instrument. I then hung it between the legs of the bridge and wrapped the cord around the tailpiece to keep it from wobbling around. It then ran through the small PA system.
I've seen a few pictures of Charlie Haden doing this.
I gotta say, it sounded pretty great.
Has anyone else tried this? It seems it would be a fairly inexpensive and effective way to amplify in low-volume situations.
