Double Bass Mic or pickup or ????

My current setup - Fishman BP100 into FDeck Series 2 into either a DI box or a Carvin MB110. Though at my last gig the DI box sounded like crap, so I think next time I'll run to the Carvin and let them mic that to get me into the PA.

EDIT - Note, this is for playing on stage. At a bluegrass jam, I go unplugged.

K&K Bass Max is all you need. and you don't need a preamp either. i've had several different preamps in the past but it's totally not necessary with the Bass Max. nowadays i just plug the pickup straight into the amp or even into the PA and it sounds great. i get more compliments on my sound now than i ever have. i have tried alot of different set-ups and this is by far the best i have found. i would stay away from the fishman. it was the worst, in my opinion. i really did like my Revolution Solo II pretty well, but i still just prefer the Bass Max over everything. i had another bassist talk to me before a show the other day, and he asked what i used. and when i told him, he was like, "oh, thats all? you really need to get a blender..." and all that other stuff. but after the show he was beside himself. he couldn't believe how good it sounded with such a straight forward approach.

I also use a K&K BassMax, and a K&K pre-amp for louder situations. The pre isn't really needed unless you don't have access to the amp. I use it for volume and minor adjustment for hi mid and low. In my opinion, none of the piezo type pic-ups do a bass justice.

Like several others, I have experimented with a lavalier type mic. These are (IMHO) only good for low volume situations and can be boomy.

I was at a BG festival last year where a bassist was borrowing a bass supposedly with a pic-up on it, but was surprised to find out there wasn't - right when they were going onstage. The sound guy (very experienced) didn't even blink: He took the cord off an SM58 mic and jammed it through between the A and D after length, reattached the cord and had him play a little, then tilted the mic until they got the sound they wanted - taped it in place. Turned out absolutely fantastic!

FYI - My FDeck ended up with a dead battery last week and not having a replacement, I plugged in direct to the MB110. Hot damn - still sounded good. The FDeck made a big difference going to my Hartke BG rig, but the Carvin seems to behave just fine using the signal strait from the Fishman.
