has anybody heard of this guy? I'm on dave douglas's mailing list and I got a email about this bass player he signed to his label. I listened to some stuff on greenleafmusic.com and wow, i really love the stuff i heard. The writing is sort of weird but also kind of like Drew Gress and some other New York guys I've heardand the other players on the recording sounded killer too.

Double Bass Michael Bates?

I've heard Michael Bates last summer in a jazz festival in Italy; we played the in the same evening, he played my bass and he played after me with Michael Blake Trio.
Very interesting musician, great arco playing, nice person. It was the first time I've heard him and I think he's a good musician. I hope to heard and meet him again.

Cool thanks. His website mentioned that he played with michael blake, who i know from a ben allison cd i bought.
i found his myspace page (myspace.com/michaelbatesmusic) and theres this super cool solo piece that uses all these harmonics. very beautiful. i also went back to the greenleaf music site a couple more times to listen to his new recording some more and decided to order his cd...his bass sounds huge and i dig his composing too....if i like that one i guess he has some other cds i might check out so.
i gotta get to new york one if these day 'cause there just so many great players that people donteven know about.
