Double Bass mic'ing a bass live with a 57

I tried that at a slightly raucous restaurant gig last weekend. I could sorta hear myself through the mains, but on the recording (made by the singer's special lady on her iPad) I was totally inaudible. I could be heard just fine on iPad recordings when we go 100% acoustic. From now on, if the PA is coming, so is my Rev Solo.

I have had very good luck with an SM57 with a foam windscreen pointing at the soundboard ,very closely, beneath the bridge with elastic hair ties. About 4 tied together, then wrapping around the bridge/ adjusters, with the loops around the head of the mic. The end of the mic of course thru the after length of the D and A with that being held with one tie not tight at all. You can adjust the distance to the soundboard. The added bass boost of the proximity effect makes up for the low end roll off. It stays in place very well and sounds pretty good.

ive had good success here in the house with a 58 pointed at the table between the feet blended with a pickup. the 58 didnt have great low end, but i think that's why i was able to get loud without it feeding back. pickup did the low end, 58 provided the "air". will try it on a gig soon. great thing is i dont need phantom power, so with a trs adapter, any preamp will do.
