Micing a vintage SVT..what mic do you use?

Ok, after a issue last sat night, I need a mic for my SVT/Fliptops 4x10 rig.

Played a cool club as a fill in for another band. 24hr notice, and have never been to the place. All I knew was that they had a PA. Didnt know if they had a soundman OR if the place was big or small. I decided to bring the 8x10 just in case I wasnt miced and needed to fill the room with my rig. Soundman was in shock looking at the 8x10. I asked him what he wanted to do, and he said "I want you to turn down". This was before I even turned it on! Anyway, stage was insanely bassy. My sound was overly boomy on the E string and quiet everywhere else. Couldve fixed the prob with EQ, but the soundman said it was fine and I trusted him. I was just afraid to really turn up because I wanted to be nice to the club for letting us fill in. I recorded it from the audience with my edirol r09 and it sounded just as crappy in the audience as it did onstage :(

I learned a lesson. I am buying a mic and leaving the 8x10 at home.

What is the ideal mic for a vintage SVT 4x10 rig?

If it were up to me, the choices would be as follows:
1- Electro-Voice RE-20
2- Sennheiser MD421
3- Shure SM7b

After those three, the Shure SM57 but I would insist on having the TapeOp/Terry Manning modification (just remove the transformer) and a good preamp.

IMHO - YMMV
