(sorry) try to boot on any Linux (disk 1) or Windows (98SE or later)
CDROM. if that doesn't work then your drive has probably kicked the bucket.

Right. If it has kicked the bucket, then my parents will spring 20 bones for me to get a plug-and-play (or plug-and-pray depending how you look at it) CD drive.
