Midi help needed

I've got a DMX lighting controller (Elation DMX Operator) and a midi foot pedal (Ground Control V2 by DMG).

I can't figure out how to get these things to talk to each other.

I reset the Ground Control to factory settings. Put both on midi channel 1 and plugged in a midi cable between the two, but no joy.

Pressing the buttons on the foot controller changes nothing on the DMX lighting controller. Like the midi notes aren't being sent or received.

I'm totally new to midi. Am I missing something simple?

I have never used the pieces of gear you need help with however I did use a Roland fc200 midi foot controller to run a modeling amp for a long time and I've used software to control hardware via midi. There are different types of midi messages, note messages, control change messages, and program change messages. It sounds like your foot pedal might not be sending the right sort of message for your lighting controller to understand. I think a fair amount of manual reading is in order. I'd start with the lighting controller. See what sort of messages it is expecting, then figure out how to get the foot pedal to send them.
