Mike Inez Fishman Pickups

Intriguing. What do you feel is the tone difference between the two modes?

it's pretty similar to the tone in the demos Mike Inez does on the Fishman website. The standard tone has a lot of treble bite, and tight low end. the mids aren't scooped though but maybe a bit less in the low mids than in the vintage setting which seems to bring down some treble and put up the lower mids.

Finally got the bass I built specifically for the Mike Inez pickup done last night. Well, I still have to file the bridge saddles, but close enough!

So far I really like it. I have mine positioned right between the treble coil of a P bass and the Neck coil of a MM.

Such a quiet set up, not a hum or buzz even with the preamp maxed.

I likey! I have a G&L L-1000 that I'm putting the Inez pup in as soon as it arrives. (ordered today) I'm looking forward to having an aggressive P style sound that can mellow as well.

Well that's good. I liked mikes tone in the videos he did but there haven't been a ton of good clips otherwise (this thread notwithstanding).

Hey everyone, I'm relatively new here. Hello.
I just finished building myself a 6 string. Had a Warwick Thumb 6 bolt on years ago. Had sold it.. have regretted it ever since.
Anyway, this time around I wanted to do a narrow spaced 6. So I started with a 5 string DIY kit. Found the narrowest individual saddles I could find. Then ground the sides down to get them even tighter together.
Then.... I finally got the Mike Inez Fluence 5 set. Being in Canada, and a wonderful 2020 Covid year. It took me 7 months to get them.
Everything turned out great. As you can see I installed 2 switches. One on each pick up. That way I can have the Inez neck pickup or the Fluence bridge pickup in any combination of voice. I also changed which coil is active for the bridge pickup when split to single coil. ( went with the bridge side ) Comes from Fishman set to neck side.
I guess I could have added a 3rd switch to be able to select between coils. Future project LOL.
I borrowed from the above diagram and then added the second swich.
Someone had commented that you couldn't use the 4 string pickup set on a narrow spaced 5 string bass. When I read that I was worried that the same might apply trying to use the 5 string set on a narrow 6.
I can happily say that all 6 strings ring out nice and clear on the mike Inez neck pickup.
One thing I do have to change is on the blend knob. Being that this is left handed. I have to reverse the pickups going into the blend knob. Right now if I roll it towards the bridge it activates the neck pickup and if I roll it forward to the neck, it activates the bridge pick up. Didn't catch that until I had everything put together and was playing with it.
ButI have to say.. the Mike Inez set sounds awesome !!!!!!
Wow what is that string spacing? It does look TIGHT! The 5-string neck pickup has a P-bass coil arrangement with one short coil and one long coil so that the middle string has coverage and isn't getting sensed by both coils (which would cause the tone of the A string to be duller than the other 4 due to phase cancellation than the others in my experience). My guess is that either your A or D strings is sitting quite close to the edge of the larger coil (since we aren't sure which is the long coil in this pickup), but you may have been saved by that super tight spacing. If you bend the A upwards towards the E or the D downwards towards the G do you hear any weirdness with one of the two?

Anyway, congrats on a very cool looking COVID project bass!

The L-1000 is already an aggressive P! Lol but in all seriousness the Inez pickup is that grindy Alice In Chains tone so you should be happy.

I also like the preamp. It reminds me of the HAZ preamp in Spectors where you can just dime it and rock out.

At one point I foolishly sold my MFD pup & replaced it with a EMG. I was going to buy another MFD, but saw the Inez pup & thought I'd give it a try. Looks like the best of both worlds......:bassist:

Damn I'm jealous! Is it a modern L1000 or vintage? I had a couple vintage ones that were beasts, and I think the Inez package would totally work on those basses somehow!

Hi,
Just measured the actual spacings. At the bridge, the strings are 15.5mm center to center. I was shooting for 15mm. If I would have had access to milling machine I could have done it. But all I had was a belt sander. Was getting a bit hot on the fingers LOL,, So15.5 it is. The nut is 1 3/4 inch. B to C center to center is 1 - 9/16 inch.
It is tight. Fretting the notes is smooth and easy. Plucking with the fingers makes you really tighten up and clean up your technique. I like it. I don't really do any slap style. So nothing suffers there.
I went and plugged in and listening to the A and D strings. Everything comes through nice and even with the other strings. I went to the 24th fret and bent the 4 middle strings in both directions as much as I could. I didn't hear any signal drops or phase shifts while bending back and forth. Maybe the transition between the coils in the Fishman's isn't affected like a conventional P bass style split coil. I have no idea how the VooDoo inside works.
But it sounds good to me.

Pretty sure just based on the info Fishman gives that it is a pretty standard split-coil design, and on that design a string that ran over both coils would have phase cancellation and output irregularities (being on the proximity of the magnetic field of two coils). I had a cheapo project tight-spacing 5 string bass years ago (bought from a pawn-shop for $30 as a fun repair challenge project) that had a standard PJ route with EMGs and the A string ran right down the center of the P over the ends of both coils and sounded quite different to the other strings. I ended up fudging a fix on that one by shifting the neck and bridge slightly so that the strings were off center from the pickups and it worked alright.
I suspect on your bass that the extra-tight spacing is saving you by keeping whichever string straddles the coil split just far enough towards the longer coil that it isn't an issue. You could use a magnetic viewing film over the pickup to get a clear view of the two coils if you're ever interested. That is tight spacing! It reminds me of the old G&L L-5000, though that may have been straight 15mm spacing: G&L L5000 1990 Black | Lopez Music Center llc. | Reverb

It's a 81 L-1000. Over the years it's been converted to an L-2000, had MFDpups, T-bird pups as well as active EMG & a DG Tonecapsule. So it's not exactly stock. But it plays great and has what some may call "Mojo". (And yes I hope you had Dr. Evil giving air quotes when you read this:D) It's a great bass and should sound great with the Inez pups.

There is certainly a part of me thats like "how could you sell that original pickup?", but then an equal (or bigger) part that is also an endless/restless tinkerer says "hell-yeah"! Please tell me its a mahogany model??? My best L2K was (also the heaviest though, which is why it didn't last)
My longest-running L2K was an '83 that I did a TON of electronic mods to, and if I still had it I'd probably be looking hard at the Inez set!

I know what you are talking about. I guess I just lucked out on this particular setup and it works.
But as you said. There is often an issue with some spacing. Way back... around 30 years ago...
I had a 5 string custom built. Playing left handed, a leftie 5 string DID NOT exist. This was about the time when 5 strings were just starting out. I went to a shop in Toronto, Ontario Canada called the 12th Fret. I had them build me a custom 5 string left handed. I was so lucky to get a luthier named Gordon Barry that was working there at the time. He was given the job of building my bass. It turned out awesome!! Gordon Barry is the man :-) ( http://www.gwbarryguitars.com/1About/indexAbout.html )
At the time, there were no 5 string bass pickups. And I mean none, Aftermerket... Some manufacturers had some available to them or had their own made. I didn't have that luxury. I had to use an EMG P-Jazz active 4 string set. Much like Mike Inez put in his "Moon Bass". They sounded great. But the P bass pick up wasn't designed for a 5 string set up. I had a luthier in Ottawa Canada do new set up, fret dress, etc after a number of years of abuse.
He told me that the spacing was doing weird things. The "A" string was sitting "FAT and HAPPY!!" right in the middle. I never forgot that LOL

The bass I fixed up looked like it had been played near to death when I picked it up, so clearly the A string thing didn't bother the original owner. The fretboard was splitting off the neck and the finish was in ruins. I pointed out the fretboard damage and offered them $30 planning to just salvage the EMG pickups and preamp, then later I decided to give the bass a second life instead for awhile because I needed a beater bass for a spectacle of a punk band I was starting where I expected the bass to get bashed around a lot. Fun project and it served me perfectly in the role for a couple years til I broke the headstock clear off haha! Those were the days...

In the end I managed to remove a wire from the cables of the pickups I was replacing and it fit the fishman connector. Otherwise you need a 'female dupont crimp connector' and attach it to a wire. Decided to wire it all myself after I took it to a tech who said it was outside his comfort zone. First time doing soldering, so it's all messy in the cavity but it sounds great (though it needs a fresh set of strings and a proper setup)!!

I wanted it wired differently than the standard configurations that came with the set. I also found the diagram with the push/pull for coil split confusing as it had no connection to the coil split pin in the diagram! Anyways, after a lot of thought I mashed up a wiring diagram by merging the diagrams that came with the pickups with the ones from the standard fluence SB1 set. I'm attaching it in case anyone else wants it wired this way.

Also, in case someone else has this question: on the back of the MIz pup there is an '8K Imp' pin and a 'V1 Lim Off' pin. I've emailed Fishman asking what these do. The '8K Imp' pin puts the pup in 8K impedence mode so it doesn't overpower the bridge pickup, and apparently the 'V1 Lim Off' pin is used for testing purposes and is designed for internal use only (so just ignore it).

Configuration:
3-way switch: MIz Voice 2 & SB1 Voice 1 | MIz Voice 1 & SB1 Voice 2 (mid cut) | MIz Voice 1 & SB1 Voice 2 (mid flat)
Vol switch: pull for coil split

Might do some sound samples after getting it set up.
