For all I have heard about this pedal being blah, not wet, bland, etc...etc. So far, all I can say is that this beer and this pedal are equally liquidy and refreshing!

For all I have heard about this pedal being blah, not wet, bland, etc...etc. So far, all I can say is that this beer and this pedal are equally liquidy and refreshing!

I would love to hear some clips of this one. According to everyone else's description, I want a subtle filter, and this is supposed to be it.
I've been considering replacing mine, I mostly use it with my mastotron and oc-2 for synthy sounds, which it's amazing at, but for regular filter use it's just too subtle for me, I'm not a great believer in subtle effects. I'll do some soundclips this weekend if nobody beats me to it

Also, the EMMA is referred to as being subtle or tame largely because it lets your bass' tone shine through and doesn't have huge peaks and valleys. (Or volume issues!) It is still plenty "wet and funky" to my ears, it's just different than the Mu-Tron/Q-Tron sound.

Nice....I am originally from Valparaiso, IN and then moved to Michigan before comgin to Alabama....lol. We lived about 15 minuted from the New Holland Brewery....used to go there for dinner and drinks and then across to JP's for coffee.....I miss it....oh, nice pedal too....lol
Subtle...I really don't get it? 
I have only played this thru my crappy amp upstairs, which everything sounds bad thru, and it actually sounded pretty darn good!
I was getting everything that the 3 Leaf does with no problem!
The filter blows away the Pigtronix and Prometheus IMHO!
So far this is far surpassing my expectations by a long shot!
And I have actually been GASSING for this for quite a while!
I will play this thru the full monty this weekend and post my impressions.
Yeah, New Holland beers are awesome, but the picture is actually a Southern Tier Unearthly!

To me envelope filters are all about playing style, tone and context. What works for one person is completely wrong for someone else.
If I were playing 16th note finger funk I would never opt for the DOD FX25 and the EMMA would be perfect. It all depends on what you do.
To me the Disco Bob is all about letting your natural tone through and adding a healthy dollop of funk. And while I haven't tried one myself, from clips the Groove Regulator doesn't seem as wet as the original Meatball and seems rather close to the EMMA. So it IS odd to me that the DiscumBOBulator gets slammed while the 3Leaf is praised. I think the GR sounds a bit wetter, but neither is subtle to the degree that you wouldn't notice them, like some low gain overdrives might be. They both sound good to me, though they aren't my type of filter as I tend to dig filters that swallow up your notes a bit more. But I do really dig the EMMA on guitar.
But the bottom line is that if it works for you then enjoy it.

Well, the DOD 440 is the other filter that is often described around here as "subtle", so it wouldn't surprise me if it were based on that; but I have no actual knowledge of whether that's true or not. I'm not sure about the MXR, which filter is that?
I built the BYOC 440 clone, with the bass mod. And I can tell you that subtle is the furthest thing from my mind if I were going to describe it. It has an extremely deep sweep, that creates this wall-shaking WHOMP when it closes back down on your note.
TBH for me the Emma filter doesn't have enough features to compete at that price point. Meatball clones fall into that range and if you want subtle you can dial it in with the sense/attack/delay controls. If you want stupid mental you can dial that in too. And you get an FX loop to stick your fuzz pedal in, and exp. control, etc. It's nice that we've got three choices of Meatball clone now too (3Leaf, Robot Factory, Barge Concepts in order of features and price).

I've just always found all of the meatball-type filters to be WAYYY to quacky. Maybe I just don't like that quack sound. I want a filter that does a less-peaky, 'bwow' sound. Maybe the Meatballs are capable of that sound. But I'd never know, because no one ever makes a clip like that. It seems like everyone who has a meatball/wad/GR is only interesting in making donald duck sounds
I can guarantee the EMMA is not based on the DOD 440. The MXR I'm thinking of is the M-120. Or maybe it's the old Ross that I read it was based on. I don't remember.
Cheers and yes, 'tis the Psilocybe. I don't think I've ever even tried another phaser (except some old DOD many years ago), once I got ze Psilocybe I thought "okay, I'm done searching for phasers." I wish dirt boxes were that easy.
I've always liked the sound of this filter but never tried one. reminds me a bit of the BassIQ in up/down mode. I like these squishy swamp-moss-between-your-toes sounding filters that have some playability. I like higher resonance filters too, of course, but not for every occasion
