Modding old cheap bass for learning experience

Without going into the whole it's not worth it to mod a cheap bass thing, I just want to mod my old rogue 5 string to learn how to work on my basses and if i screw it up, well it's a $100 bass so no real money lost. Since one of the things i want to do is replace the pickups, where does one measure a P pickup to determine which one to choose?

If it has a P pickup, then you may want to research the various options on the market, including reviews here on TB, to see which one is the best fit for you. Maybe check out Fender, Seymour Duncan, Nordstrand, EMG, Bartolini, Dimarzio , etc.
