Modern Bands That Sound 80's

This is NOT a rant about how much modern music sucks, because there are some bands that make good music.

However, in playing bass, as well as guitar, my biggest influences have always been the rock/punk scene of the late seventies through eighties. More specifically, artists/bands like The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Guns n' Roses, Heart, Joan Jett (Wilson and Jett are probably the only two female vocalists I really like), AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Ozzy's solo stuff. Bands that took that glam metal away and brought ugly back into rock and roll. They, to me (and this is NOT a discussion about what rock is), define the genre. The anthem-ish, yet by no means anything less than pure rock and roll tunes like "I Love Rock n' Roll" (even if it is a cover) and Barracuda and California Über Alles and Let's Lynch the Landlord and so much more . . . That's what hits me and says "I'm gonna do that if it's the last thing I do" when I hear it.

Unfortunately, that rough brand of rock'n'roll has lost to the grunge scene, post-hardcore-mathcore-metal-influenced BS. Which, don't get me wrong, I do enjoy grunge and metal and whatnot, but I like that punk/hard rock feel. And I just can't find it in any modern bands. But I might not be looking enough. Any recommendations? I need something new to love and learn from!

To me, the following list represents some of the best of the modern punk bands. Disclaimer: I have not dug the trenches and found every great punk band around, but this is just in my findings. Also, of all the bands you listed, I only enjoy the Clash, The Sex Pistols, and the Dead Kennedys. So without further a do, check out Bass Drum of Death (think garage punks), Death from Above 1979, The Cribs, Death (old band, but never released anything till 2009), Cloud Nothings (have become more Post-Punk/Post-Rock though in there recent album), Titus Andronicus (really great band!), and Team Spirit. Also, if you want some Noise Rock, check out Savages and A Place to Bury Strangers.

Also, math rock is actually a really interesting genre. Bands like Foals (really early stuff), Battles, and This Town Needs Guns are a good start to the genre.

I haven't listened to much of the math genres. I'll give them a look. I've heard a bit about Foals.

To me, they are some of the best punk bands, but I want still-active bands, preferably recent. Being born in the late nineties, I never got to see my idols release new albums. I mean, St. Anger is a joke and Lars Ülrich is a monster, then there was my brief interest in Blink-182, Sum-41, and the like - but we don't talk about that - and I like some Green Day, but starting with Uno, there was a massive quality drop, and they're hardly punk. More like guilty pleasure pop-rock.

There are so many bands that you could check out, but the first thing that came to mind when you mentioned you had a pop-punk phase was this Australian band that's spearheading a bit of a renaissance in straight up skate/pop punk down here - Violent Soho.

Perhaps more mid-90s/early-2000s punk rock than 80s, but you might enjoy...

I know a lot of bands that sound like they are straight out of the 70s, but I don't know if there is a vibe in the 80s that people can really latch on to. Maybe The Killers? They remind me of someone knocking off a combination of Duran Duran and Erasure.

I like The Killers, but they're not quite the rock sound I'm going for. They're more of a fusion of the lighter forms of rock to me.

Bands that have the 70s sound would be good, too.

Right down to the outfit and all. Gotta say, that's commitment.

Take a look at The Oath, Witchcraft and Graveyard. All very retro sounding, even down to the recording.

I do like Smiths and Depeche, but still not what I'm looking for. I want the harder edge of the rock scene.

If you're looking for punk, look for your local scene. That's where punk thrives, in small, local, dirty hole in the wall "venues" and trashed houses. Ime anyways. I'm a former punk rocker turned metalhead, but I'll always have a soft spot for the pure chaotic insanity of a -real- punk show.
