Modulus Mob

I was offered this bass in a trade...supposed to be a Q5 but I've never seen one with 3 pickups before...anyone have any ideas?

Well it's gotta be a ~97/98 or earlier, as it doesn't look to have the "adjustment rod" in it.

But yeah that's a Quantum 5, just hot rodded! I'm assuming those toggle switches are to work the pickups like coils in a MM or similar pickup, yeah?

That looks pretty slick. How much ya want for it? :smug: ;) I only have 4 Quantums, so I need more. :D

Well, I haven't traded for it yet as I'm trying to figure out what this one is realistically worth...any ideas?

I dig that very much! Any particular reason why it has a Lane Poor/EMG set up? Was the EMG added for more clarity at the bridge?

That's how it was bought by me. It had been sitting up in a closet for about 3 years, and the guy just got it out to move it and I'm glad he did!

To be honest I like the combo. The LP is nice, but favoring the neck does get a little "loose" sounding to me, and the EMG is a very nice compliment. Keeps the sound tight.

I played it this morning at church, and it just smoked. I will never buy a lined fretless again! ;)

Quantums depending on year and condition usually go between $1200-1700. I know that's kind of a gap, but just depends on who really wants it.

I traded for my 1994 green one, and I bought my 1997 chechen/chechen at a killer price on eBay, simply because the guy didn't have any feedback so nobody else jumped. Best move I ever made. Would've never tried out a chechen-fingerboard Q5, which has become my heavy favorite, and is what my custom Q5 will have.

i cant resist an excuse to join in a modulus thread and post a pic. :)

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

- 97' Q6
- bartolini pickups and preamp
- 2tek
- tinted neck

it usually looks a bit more purple than the pics show, and its much darker when seen indoors. i think its their red over blue finish.

Wow, velvet red over blue! Never seen one in "real life" before. :)

Is that a string-through design on that 2Tek? Hot dang that is sweet!

i had never seen this finish in real life before either, and i had only seen a Q6 with a 2tek maybe once or twice before online. i got this one on ebay a few years ago. it came with a hell of a lot more dings, chips and scratches than the seller admitted to (among other inaccuracies and neglected details ), resulting in my paying a higher price than i would have otherwise. but in the end im really glad that i went ahead and bought this bass. it plays like a dream, sounds great, fits in my mixes better than anything else i've tried, looks very cool, and i feel quite lucky to have one with a 2tek.

each string is almost its own string-through bridge. each saddle screws into a big fat "finger" of metal which extends through the body and down to the master bridge plate that mounts on the back of the bass. however the strings are run through holes in the fingers that start a little less than 1/2 way through the body. so the bridge goes all the way through the body, but the strings only go part of the way through.

the 2tek definitely adds a considerable amount of weight to the bass, but it also seems to add extra clarity and definition even to a modulus. the one catch is that with the B string set as low as it can go, the saddle does not pull back far enough to intonate properly. it starts to go out at the 7th fret. i dont normally play my B much higher than that though so its not a big deal for me.

i'd love to try a fretless Q6 with a 2tek, if i can ever find one. though for that matter, i'd love to try a fretless modulus at all. i've still yet to get my hands on one.

by the way...what number are you up to in the modulus mob?

Had two Flea Modulus basses loved the sound the set up but the necks were too C shaped for me. went back to Fender and Sadowsky and Musicman. For some reason I love Fender basses and always come home to them. :D

You definitely want a fretless... ;)
I had a 2006 lined fretless with an unbelievable top on it last year and really didn't dig it.
I recently acquired the one I posted recently and am totally in love with it. You definitely should try one out.

And I need to go back through here and keep the list updated, I've kinda been slackin' off so far. But if you want to join then just lemme know and I'll assign ya one, no problem.

Have fun with your dead spots, blah blah blah... Sheep. ;)

I had a Flea 5 and loved it, except I gotta have (at minimum) 35" scale on the B to make it worth my while.

I'd love to get my hands on another Flea 4 one day though.

I LOVE that green Q5 of yours...just gorgeous! I see that you're into Mesa's as well. I just traded for a 400+ that I run through a Berg NV610. I play heavier rock - do you think a Q5like the one one in my pics would do well in that context?

i'd be happy to join the ranks, thanks. :)
a modulus Q5 was the first high end bass i ever tried, and it was love at first note, but it took me around 15 years to finally be in a position to buy a quantum. im very happy to finally have one now. (though i admit, i did go through a wood-only phase for part of that time...what was i thinking!)

What I like about Q's is that even through a cheapy DI box, they still sound good. Not like a middle of the road Fenfer or something, where it sounds like strings against cardboard FOH if your soundguy has only a slight clue on how to mix/EQ a straight bass, which happens all too often at festivals, and the like.

Heavy rock, indie/funk/jazzy rock and country, as well as worship, just do wonderfully with these basses, as I play all of these genres. I haven't really heard many setups that don't sound great with these basses.

I love my Q5!
