Modulus Vertex opinion

Im an all Modulus guy (own funk unlimiteds and VJs). I tried a Vertex at a store and wasn't too impressed. Seemed "cheaper" than a VJ or a Funk - I can't really explain it. Just felt cheap. The neck was great and thats mostly what you are paying for. The sound was good but I also wasn't a fan of the weight distribution. I would save up for a Funk or a VJ with the active/passive option. Funks come with an active Aguilar preamp - that's winning :)

My local GC has had a Vertex in stock since they were released. I have played it once and was not at all impressed. I've owned both a Flea 4 and 5 so I was expecting something similar. The neck is wonderful but everything else seems uninspiring.

The bass is passive and the single pickup is positioned in between where a P and MM would be. So you'd sort of expect it to sound not quite like a P and not quite like a passive Ray. The bass just seemed unresponsive, nothing lively or exciting. I'd like to say it was just the strings, but it was something more than that. Maybe it sounds great in a mix, but I'll probably never know.

Additionally, the body is oddly shaped and balanced. Maybe it works better on a strap. I don't know. There was absolutely nothing inspiring about my experience with one. It's isn't a bad bass, but for the price, I guess I just expect a lot more.

IMO, IME, and YMMV, of course.

For what you're getting...I think the price of these "new" is a little steep. Looks like a great bass for for "Metal" though. :D :hiding:

I definitely agree with you on the prices being a little steep

However, Hello Music has a pretty good deal on it today though few hundred bucks cheaper than everywhere else.

With that said I searched for threads on this bass trying to find some reviews ... I have heard good things about it but no personal experience

...I did hear Phil Lesh used it, that has to count for something

I have a vertex with a bartolini soapbox pickup and active electronics. I absolutely love it. I also own a fender jazz and to me it essentially sounds like a mix between the modulus flea and a fender jazz. I would definetly reccomend them!
