Your right on monitors being very subjective. All monitors alter sounds to one degree or another. All engineers do the same in their heads when they listen. Getting great results is all about making what happens in your head work right with what's happening in the hardware.

Stay away from NS-10 as far as possible. These are great to check your final mix, so it translates good to other sound systems. What you want is something accurate and most importantly pleasant sounding to the ears, NS-10 has a harsh sound, so fatigue to your ears is a factor which you will have to get used to or overcome.And it might interrupt your work flow, or even your mixing / composing abilities. Unless you have a budget to buy two pairs I woeful not recommend NS-10's. Now the question you need to answer do you want active, or passive + Amp. If you're going to upgrade later, then passive+amp is the way to go, since a good amp and high quality cable can drastically improve your sound. Next question is how big is your room, any acoustic treatment done to it and how far will you sit from the monitors? Considering you have a small or average room I would suggest these:

1) JBL LSR25P

2) Sequerra Met 7 see if you can convince this guy to sell it for something like $450

The best thin is go to your local store bring some CDs which are similar to you ,so you know how they sound ,and listen to as many as possible. Also ask if you can bring a pair to your house for a try out, since monitors will sound different in different rooms.

In my onion, there isn't much too choose on the market under $1200 which is in the good monitor category, so I'd rather spend $700 on monitors and $500 on acoustic treatment which will help a lot more.

I stand by my comments about the NS-10's. While I am far from a pro or expert, my NS-10's are fantastic and (key point) my mixes translate well.

On top of that, I picked up the pair for $200.

I am sure there are many great choices out there.
