MonoNeon interview with Questlove

I was shocked when he said Anthony Jackson was his favorite bass player. I would have guessed Bootsy 
The most shocking statement was by the host QuestLove . He stated that he didn’t even respect the bass as an instrument until he played and recorded with Pino .

He does not play like Bootsy, and he has been in some Fusion bands.
I was surprised too because Hub (R.I.P.) was no slouch. Hub had Jazz and Classical chops as well as the coolest T-40 in popular music. I guess another way of looking at it is that Pino is truly great. Pino’s internal metronome is as accurate as an atomic clock.

Especially since Hub was arguably the best thing about The Roots.
I was referring to his style of dress and use of pedals. He did mention pfunk being a great influence but said AJ was his top bass inspiration.
Saw him again a couple of nights ago. Probably the most important modern bass player. Astonishing chops, but more importantly, a serious artist. He’s very likeable.
He did this amazing album with his grandma liz, Crusty Neon Missionary Baptist Church. She is going through dementia, and Mono is getting these songs with her down while he can. There is a goofiness to it, but also a serious artistry. He really loves where he's from and who he is, and he mixes those gospel vamps with his space funk so well. I wonder what your thoughts might be on it @Dr. Cheese
One of the lines his grandma says something like, "i don't like no foolishness, but you're my favorite mess" and it sounds exactly like something my mama would say.
The last song is about him letting his grandma go. Me and my girlfriend who was raised by her grandma listened to it in the car and got choked up. It's just this unbelievable tune.
Mono isn't just some jackass in a pink hat, he's a serious creator and everyone in the industry respects him. I think talkbass will always be stuck on Jack Bruce and Geezer Butler, but mono is the most important bass player today

I LOVE MonoNeon. Unapologetically original in his music and the way he views the world. Stockhausen and Albert Lee is what he hears. Pretty cool.
Being stuck on Jack Bruce or Geezer Butler, or in my case, Marcus Miller, is a function of age. People my age and older won’t be around a whole lot longer, and if we are around, we won’t be in charge of the media. Things will change.
Yes, you are right. I’m getting older myself (41) and I can already see the future is not mine. Maybe I should be a little more respectful
. I hope I will keep an open mind as my life goes on. I think what’s great about the old players (AJ, MM, etc) is they have lasted the test of time, so history has preselected who to pay attention to.
