I have the Bass MuRF with a tap tempo and 1 expression pedal set up to the envelope control. This thing is NUTS! The one thing i was wondering...

Does anyone have any recommended settings that they keep going back to? Any especially nasty-sounding positions I should know about?

I run a Line 6 Lowdown 400W combo, and I find the MuRF really sounds face-meltingly sick when I have the amp model set to grind. Its downright scary. Also, this thing can give me the greasiest-sounding wet slinky funk bass without phasing, flanging, or envelopes. I really wanna hear what it will do in combination with the Super Octave and EBS IQ pedals i just ordered.

Want to get really nuts? Sometimes for kicks, ill run my bass into my Boss DD3 Delay>MuRF...set the resonance so its an infinite delay, and then just tweak out on the MuRF. it takes on a life of its own, deep space/outher-worldly sonic dimentions.

Any Ideas where in the signal chain this guy fits best?

I have the Freqbox and love it, despite some interference issues I mentioned in another thread, which are not uncommon with other 'foogers. It's very versatile, and really should be higher up on peoples list when considering a bass synth, as I have found it competes with and often beats my Deep Impact and G5 when looking for a new sound. It would work well with a MuRF, I just can't justify a MuRF, no way I could change things on stage to get the most out of it, and it's too expensive for just one live sound.

Ive only had the MuRF for a month or so, and when you get the expression pedals and tap tempo hooked up, you can really get this thing going live. I play electro-space-funk influenced heavily by 80's cartoons and vid games, so this thing is so perfect for getting into that world sonically (i coulld see how it might not work in other musical contexts). It ***** on any phaser ive ever used, and i dont even really know what im doing half the time. I was going to get the FreqBox, but i demo'd it, and it didnt compare with the MuRF for what i wanted.

It wont compare - they're vastly different pedals :)
My point regarding live use was more in relation to the inability to save any kind of preset. There are so many possibilities, and the nature of the music I make means I change sounds constantly, and fiddling about with the sliders would be very annoying. I get away with the Freqbox as there are only a few pots, and I only use three distinct sounds at this point. I could imagine wanting to use hundreds with the MuRF, it's awesome, but slightly impractical. Of course with the new Moog controller, this problem is somewhat overcome...

true, goes back to my "intimidating" coment earlier. But Im thinking of getting some "funtack" to use as markers so I can adjust the MuRF to settings I establish as "good" sounds...

I am finding that the BIGGEST advantage to the MuRF i am finding is
A) the thing sounds different from any other effect, very very unique sound, not many other bassist use it
B) it plays well with all my other pedals, and changes things up so much that things never get stale. It can give new life to a tired pedal.
c) it makes the bass models on my Line 6 amp so much more fun to explore...op[ens up new sonic doors to everything

Yeah I must say that I really love my MuRF. I run the same setup as hoagie most of the time, with my EP-2 controlling the envelope and another pedal tapping the tempo so that the animation will line up with the drums. I usually cut some of the low mids, boost the upper mids, and cut the highs so that the bass takes on a more nasal tone. I run it after my wah and find that the wah really accentuates the filters quite nicely.

Another setting I love is plugging my EP-2 into the LFO input. I adjust the knob on the EP-2 to control the oscillations of the LFO to get a very "grindy" or "dirty" type of synth tone. I do this setting with the animation off, however.

Also, I recently hooked up my MicroMoog synth for playing basslines when I'm not playing bass guitar (A/B box so I can switch freely), and running THAT synth through the MuRF is pretty mind-blowing.

I can certainly see why some would find it hard to accommodate this pedal in a live situation, and I myself have had to practice hard "remembering" settings and squeezing enough time in between songs or during interludes when I don't play to dial in what I need. However, I find this to be very rewarding and much prefer the sound of this analog pedal to most other digital synth pedals I've tried. It's so unique, with tons of possibilities.

The only problem I'm finding now is getting a proper blend of this effect with my other pedals. I don't believe the MF is true bypass (I could be wrong but haven't found any evidence that it is) so I just bought a Barge Concepts VFB-2. I like the MuRF to be very wet while I want my other effects (fuzz, wah, etc...) to be more on the dry side to let the low end through. I still have a lot of experimenting in my signal chain so that I can let the pedal really shine. I'm also VERY interested in how the feedback loop on the Barge Concepts VFB-2 will interact with the MuRF.

i was thinking of setting up the MuRF in an "effects loops" so that my signal runs thru clean if im not using this...

I find that it also sounds best when my wah is last...it gets "unruly" sometimes if i go wah>MuRF, crazy spikes that makes the soundmen batty...

anyone running an Octaver with the bass MuRF? how does that work out? How about with an envelope filter, ie Qtron, EBS BassIQ?

Well, now I'm missing my Bass MuRF. When I had it I had alot of fun with it, but couldn't find a practical use for it with my (then) current band. I opted for an actual keyboard synth, (Little Phatty), which is a total blast. Had I kept that pedal, it would've been great companion to the synth, The CP 251 controller looks like a great addition to anyone's Moogerfooger set up. It's too late for me, but maybe that's just what you guys need for more "stage" control.

honestly, the CP 251 is more than id ever need for anything, ever. the MuRF with a tap tempo, and 3 expression pedals, are all you really need. Or, just put it on a lil table next to ya when you play live so you can flip knobs on the fly....
