most dynamic bass based on pick position...

Definitely a P, but even more so than my P-bass, my Rick Turner Electroline 5-string with piezo pickups. It can go from a huge, blooming "double bass" tone to a tight, funky, pointy "Jaco" tone with nothing more than position shifts. All my basses are responsive to plucking position shifts to some degree, but *nothing* I've ever played works so well as my Turner.

All basses are sensitive to pick or finger position. Just pick an open string halfway (fret 12). You'll hear the base frequency plus the odd harmonics. If you then try to produce the second harmonic by touching the string at fret 12, you'll experience that it mutes completely, as opposed to what happens if picked at the usual position.

I noticed this with my Peavey Patriot. It is very sensitive to hand placement and the tone changes dramatically compared to the other single pup basses I've experimented with. It really does not seem to "suffer" from having just a single pickup.
