Cliff Williams of AC/DC is a wonderful player who doesn't need a lot of flash or technique to make his point. It's a common malady of many players to dismiss his work as decades of plodding eighth notes. To the contrary, he plays a lot of stuff that shows that he has a strong, tasteful, and musical command of his instrument and his role in the band.

A careful listen and a complete understanding of what really is needed in a solid rock band will reveal him to be a vital part of the successful AC/DC sound.

I think Cliff Williams fits the bill perfectly, and I like mostly that he doesnt try and act like someone he isnt. He's very sure of himself and who he is.

I appreciate the bassists that can do both. Abe Laboriel comes to mind. The man is incredible and can do some mind blowing stuff. However, listen to any of the CDs that he plays on as a studio musician and he is just a solid foundation. Take a listen to Michael Jackson's Dangerous album. Just solid bass playing there.

Okay, he's not "underrated" but Familyman Barrett is clearly not a "technical" player. In fact, from the videos I've seen of him playing solo for an interview or whatever, his technique appears to be pretty sloppy.

..and yet, probably my favourite bassist of all time ever in the whole world ever ever.

mccartney and simmons are the two that spring instantly to mind. both had a great upfront, present, walking groove that was pretty much the lead instrument in thier respective bands.
stever harris is another that, while not especially techinical, is very cool and present.
