Chalk works very well and you don't have to 'rough up' the instrument!

Look at the D-string at the tailpiece. Is the ball-end not inserted properly? That could cause extra tension.

a bit of rosin works very well. just wipe the feet on a cake of rosin, that's enough.

Sometimes the bag you carry the bass in can pull on the bridge. This is another possible cause. I agree with the rosin approach. I like using extremely fine rosin dust. Some violin rosin ground in a mortar/pestle works well. I use a cheap coffee grinder at my bench..

Nope. If you're getting that from the pictures, it's because they're taken at a slight angle. The body is perfectly symmetrical.
