Moving into college!

So I'm finally settled in my room at college (University to some of you) I'm going to Worcester State College. Its pretty cool so far.

Any tips from those of you who have been through it or are going through it to make the "experiance" as good as possible?
Get off TB and go meet people. That's how you make it better.

Don't be afraid to drink a few beers, but keep it to the weekends (Thursday is part of the weekend by the way.)

Keep a balance between school and res life, but the "college experience," IMO, takes place largely outside of the classroom as well.

Start drinking beer, don't stop till you graduate. :hiding:

Erm... This is fun... BUT!

S'what I did, and I never ended up graduating...

Like Aaron said, it's about balance. Under no circumstances should you devote your entire life to study and class, you'll go nuts. Have some fun, party a little, meet new people, blah blah blah...

But under no circumstances should you devote your entire life to partying and drinking, you'll go nuts. :D

Man, those were some of the best times of my life so far. So many new things to see and people to do. :ninja:

I think you'd have to intentionally mess things up to not have a good time. ;)

I'll tell you what I've told both my daughters: THE SECRET TO PASSING EVERY COURSE IN COLLEGE.

1) Go to EVERY class. Seriously. DO NOT miss any classes.
2) Take good notes.
3) Read your notes thoroughly before the test.
4) Complete and turn in every assignment on time.

That's it....the absolute minimum to succeed.

If you do those four things, you will be paying more attention than 80% of the students in the class, and if you have even average intelligence, you will pass. It HELPS to actually read the text and do all the homework, but you'll be amazed how far this gets you.

Most students fail because they blow off class, don't take notes and therefore have nothing to prompt their memory, and try to learn everything the night before the exam.

(I have a PhD and teach at the Master's level and most of my students that get into trouble do so simply because they miss one of the four points above - usually either not showing up for class or failing to turn in assignments. Stupid.)

Have fun - enjoy all the social aspects of college - and have A BEER, don't go out to get drunk. You'll have a agreat time.

Yeah... Bad mojo, dude.

My first year in college, I got thrown in a dorm with what turned into the biggest drug dealer in town. Yes, I partook. Yes, it is part of the reason I flunked that year. Yes, I am clean now, and am much happier for it.

Learn from my mistakes, bud. Yer better off without that ****.

2) Take good notes.

Bad advice. Don't take notes. Go to class everyday and listen very intently on what the teacher is doing and try to follow him.

In my Strength of Materials class there was 1 student taking notes. The teacher stopped his lecture, looked at him and said, "Why are you taking notes? Everything i am saying is in the book. Pay attention to what I"m saying and read the book to refresh."

This isn't necessarily true. IMO, it's different for every professor. Sure, you'll run into people like this, but in my sophomore year, I had a history professor that lectured so far off the path of the required reading she actually had us take our books back to the bookstore.

I missed quite the number of classes in college, didn't take notes, and certainly didn't turn in all my assignments on time. I never failed a class, I graduated with a 3.8 from RPI. I think what you have there are solid recommendations, but an absolute minimum? I have to disagree.

Personally, I skip class all the time. I am also in engineering, one of the more difficult majors my college offers. It really is OK every now and then, especially depending on the professor. I had a few professors would would actually make it harder for me to learn than if I just read the book on my own.

As for having a good time... make sure to meet the people on your hall. Things are a WAY more fun if you have lots of friends. Make your dorm awesome too. Gets loads of fans, posters, a big TV, anything you can think of. Make it home.

Yep, major part of college studies is studying the stuff yourself. Lectures only give the foundation, rest you have to do by your own. It's simple really: more time you spend in studying, better grades you get.

The most important thing when moving into a new college? Make friends, and make good friends at that, preferably both from your classmates and the older students. Socializing is very important, but usually sundays are better spend by reading and writing than sleeping in a hangover - you don't have to skip the party, but choose the amount of drinks wisely.

Meet people, join stuff if you can, work part time if you can. Dont worry about not sleeping, I rarely fall asleep before 3am at college. During finals week I got 3 words for you: ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK

and Im serious, if I can only give you one piece of advice, the one thing I would say is:

DO NOT PUT THINGS OFF DO YOUR ASSIGNMENTS RIGHT AWAY!!
