Just a reminder of the worst case scenario!

i was just going to post that one, but i see you got ahead of me.

a real flight case is much more protective than a regular hardshell case if it fits right. yes, it's much more expensive, but they're made to withstand people flinging the instrument, sometimes down huge drops.

some airlines are supposed to let you bring it into the plane with you in theory, but i've read some posts at AGF where the plane crew knew nothing about that policy and gave them the chance to either not fly or put it in cargo.

I have a RB Continental bag and I fly pretty frequently with my bass, maybe 2-3 times a month. I always try to get it onboard in an overhead bin and most times it fits perfectly as long as it's not one of those regional commuter jets. Otherwise, I just gate check it. The biggest issue I encounter is everyone asking me to be in-flight entertainment.... that joke comes around every single time!

I've had great experiences with Delta, Southwest and American. Just some first hand perspective to offer, hope it helps.

I think what I've decided to do is to ditch the case, take it apart, and ship it. I was hoping to not have to take it apart, but I think that this is the best solution to my problem. I have plenty of bubble wrap left over from packing, and it'll also shave off some expense on my end for having additional luggage. In addition to that, It'll also give me a bit of peace of mind knowing that it'll be well protected.

I hate to lose the case, but the case is replaceable, the bass isn't. For one, it was given to me by my ex-fiance, and for another, I have no idea what preamp is in it. I bought it pre-modded, and nobody can tell what was put in it. But it's got some of the sweetest tone...

Raventepes, I'll be in the same position in a year as I'll be moving from rural NM back out to Philly and will be flying.

By that time I'll be down to one bass. An upcoming short scale hollowbody and plan on buying a Mono gig bag, but I've never flown with a gig bag before and am extremely scared of my one and only being damaged.

Interested in hearing how shipping your bass goes.

Oh I'll be flying American Airlines out of El Paso most likely.
