It's a cheap bass with Spiro Mittels - good enough for what I play EXCEPT the C note on the A string is dull , but the C sharp goes off like a cannon, with the octave below coming in. Is there any simple way to shift this effect down to the C (Bridge placement or height - etc) The logistics and expense of getting a luthier to look at it is not do-able - but a stronger C would be useful. Thanks

Well, this sounds like someone in a car repair forum saying that his car pulls to the left like hell, but he ain't gonna give his hard earned cash to some mechanic. It might be just a soundpost issue. 50 to 100 bucks (maybe more, I admit), plus gas and a few hours driving, might get your bass into such an improved state, that you will kick yourself for not having done this sooner.

Had a client with a very similar problem. Probably a wolf tone sucking energy from the note. Issue was solved by shortening the fingerboard back to a high C, the change in weight and resonance made a significant improvement. (Adding small weights under the fingerboard also helped. But we ended up trimming the excess 2cm)

BUT that was his bass, not yours.

Clamp a C-clamp to the scroll and see what happens. There's pictures somewhere on the interweb of some guy putting brass or lead weights on his tuning peg. I was always curious how about this. I suspect that it does do something because now that I have a chezk ease bass I can hear the difference with the scroll on and off

My bass has a wolf TERMINATOR, a weight that is put under the top plate, installed for a pretty aggressive wolf on A harmonic. Well, it was installed during wintertime, and it didn`t help too much. Now we have spring here, and the wolf has calmed down a lot. Let`s see what happens next winter. These are so weird issues...
