I love it when Bruce ventures into the effects forum 
Personally I don't think the digitech is the right pedal for you, its good but its not majorly funky, the filter is average and the synths don't track fast enough for some cool 16th style finger style funk

I think you might be getting Motown and funk confused? Maybe what you are looking for is an old school funk sound if youre getting a wah padel. Maybe a Bootsy Collins funkadelic type sound? I think Bootsy used somting like this Electro-Harmonix Bassballs Envelope Follower Pedal.

Yes I believe ii-v can answer that. The old style Mu-tron can.
If you get this pedal you can substitute for talent. If you get this pedal you will never sound like those stupid Fender basses that set the standard for a high percentage of the recording tones out there.

I believe Lawnmower Man put out a pedal that'll put you right on the rider to Mow Town. Make sure you have the mulcher blades.

Yes I know Bruce and your reply almost made me throw up I was laughing so hard. What I meant is that he may be under the impression that his question had something to do with motown, but in fact it doesn't.
First time in the effects room and now I know that many of the stereotypes about bassist and effects are true That is my frustration, exactly what does this have to do with motown. That is why I rephrased his question. His question is about an era behind where he wanted it. As for the actual motown sound pbass and flats is right for a high percentage of the motown music, if not all. Still will that teach him how to groove like Jamerson, maybe like Jameson, which a high amount of people located in this forum may believe that is the spelling.

I play in a Funk/dance/R&B sort of outfit (eight-piece - three horns and two singers. We need keys yet, really).
I run a Peavey Foundation bass (I think it'll be a Jazz - maybe a Lakeland? - as I make some more dough playing out) strung with T.I. Jazz Flats (LOVE these strings). I run hard compression first-thing after the bass (Boss CS-3); then an Aphex Bass Xciter before the GK head. I boost treble on the compressor, and high-mids on the amp head.
While I haven't consciously tried to copy original tones from the songs we do, it sure seems to be working-out nice.
