How do you go about playing the 32nd notes runs with out an extension? (third scale in the passage. Starting on the low Dflat). Where do you go up the octave? I've heard multiple different ways.

I have been going from the Eb back down to the low F. It may however make more sense to play to the F or the Ab to complete a third or fifth scale fragment.

Yeah, high Eb to low F is the way I do it too, and it makes the most sense in terms of the smallest shift possible, and to avoid crossing 2 strings from the D if you go to the Ab before changing octaves. Or you can fork over a couple grand for the extension

Whenever an audition calls for Shostakovich 5, Mozart 39 or Ein Heldenleben, I tune my E-string down a couple months in advance and learn to play all the excerpts to facilitate those passages.

My stand partner bought a C string and put it where the E string was. It changes the location of the lowest notes, but enables him to get the low notes without having to pay for an extension.

Well, usually I'll aim for a low B so that I can vibrate the C and get a good, controlled sound.

Trading your string for a B string also works well!
