what are the two dots on the pickup under the d string?
that is my little thing that I do to most of my instruments with a curved(radiused) fingerboard and flat pickups (which is most of them lol) I add a small 'washer' over the magnets of the D string to enhance the volume of the D string to my touch and sound. Most D strings I find are the weakest string in volume of sound and fullness.
It really works just like raising the pickup posts if they are adjustable. Or lowering the string height closer to the magnet but this also lowers the string height to the fingerboard. This can easily be removed as it is just a little dab of common glue and no risidual glue remains.
I have always wondered why fingerboards and string heights vary but most pickups are flat.
Just something I do for my personal touch since I have been playing bass for 40 years. lol
I play pretty hard so this is what works for me to raise the D string a little and therefore be able to dig in more. If someone plays with a soft touch it is not an issue.
That is why P basses sound so good since all pickups can be set to each string.
