Lots of venues EQ out most of the badd mids and just go for the low end that you feel. Lousy sound but too many of their patrons don't know beter.
One way to get the best sound you can is NEVER SIT HIGH UP, NEXT TO THE ROOF at any venue. The intersection of seats and roof ruins the sound with reflections. If you want the best sound, sit on the floor or the first level.

Interesting-a SE friend of mine gave me that advice. I'll start re introducing some more lower frequencies and see how it works (especially since I'm a 5 and 6 string player
. ). I will say that I haven't had any mud since I started dropping those lows! Sounds like I have some tweaking to do though. Thanks!
I noticed the same thing when I heard Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton + their band play in the Bell Centre Hockey arena.
1- a hockey arena is not a concert hall made for good quality sound. It's a hockey rink, the sound sucks. These shows are about making money packing people in a large place, not about quality sound. Perhaps, the sound was great on stage, and good for some areas close by, but once you're out in the cheaper seats...
