Multi-FX vs. Many-FX?

Thinking about pedalboard management versus multi-FX glitches, I'm glad that companies like Eventide, TC Electronic, and to a lesser extent EHX (worm, stereo polychorus, talk box) are making effects that have a bunch of effects built in.

Thinking about how much I could spend on a board still, after having most of my Effects GAS dealt with, I wonder if I had just waited a little while, if something like a TC Electronic Nova System, or a couple of eventide stompboxes would have been wiser.

I don't know how I'd have done it differently if I'd have been given the chance - or even if I would have...

...what about you, effects junkies?

One processor box and one foot controller to manage it. No muss, no fuss.

I just picked up a Digitech BNX3 for dirt cheap ($100) and the more I play with it, the more I like it - - delivers a CRAZY good bass synth sound, nice distortion and good chorus. The amp modeling/multitrack recording I ignore - - for $100 I think I can afford to!

oh, you mean we get a multi-fx processor and then never have to buy another pedal again? ever again?

I'm pleased as punch with my Boss Me-50B. Nothing I have found can beat it for ease of use. Makes the sounds I want reasonably well (read: I am not Justin Chancellor). One cord in. One cord out. One wall socket. No pedal GAS!

My experience with multi-effects is from 15-20 years ago; I couldn't find anything that sounded natural. But, the digital effects now are better than the digital effects were then. In fact, I use many digital effects now. I don't know, persoanlly, I like many effects. I like to be able to twiddle with things individual (although, I'm sure you can achieve similar results with a multi-effect). I like to be able to replace things in the chain as well. I feel like, with one unit, you get one sound -- even if that sound is very flexable.

Mix and match. I have a Yamaha Magicstomp that I use for certain things like chorus, flange, reverb, delay, some fuzzes and other weird things it can do, but I also use a Boss OC-2, Rat, Deep Impact and MXR Auto-Q. Currently I'm goofing with the utterly horrendous Danelectro Grilled Cheese. Since it can do something that no other pedal seems to do (whether it's good or not, I'm not sure yet) it could make its way on there.

So basically, I don't think one rules out the other. I find it convenient to have the multi take care of things it's good at and use pedals for things I'm a bit more picky about.

if u have a pedalboard you can always sell a pedal that you don't use/like/works with a multi you have to get rid of everything...

I'd prefer to just have separate stomp boxes, but some of them are very noisy and have audible clicks when engage; fine for live but not recording. I'm getting a Boss GT-10B to take care of the recording end of it.
