Music and Spirituality...

First I wanna say everything I say is based on my personal experience in life;

Music to me is one of the most spiritual things in life;

I've thought about this even as a dumb kid. I've thought about it more as a dumb adult.

But it really hit home a long time ago for me when I was living in a jail cell for a year.

Too much to explain here and I prefer to not talk about spirituality publicly but I know that I'm spirit first. And I'm just having a human experience.

I think music = a spiritual or religious experience for a lot of people, me included. I know it has helped me get through some really hard times.

I agree! It's all about finding a 'place' to be 'centered'. I don't try to use words like meditation and prayer when I describe it because they are overused.

But I know people who find the same 'thing' in cooking, martial arts, running, chess, etc,....

When I'm centred I often hear a bassline in my head telling me what I should play/expression/dynamics/etc..., a bit like an Angels guiding voice whispering in my ear. I'll often play lines/riffs I've never played before which is very inspiring.

I'm a conduit, a container that if emptied can it be filled up & poured out for others.

Playing an instrument well and getting to that place is like an engine firing on all cylinders. To be more precise those cylinders would be mind, body, soul, spirit. It's quite the event.

+1 When I play live its as if I am communicating music to the audience that is from somewhere else - I am a conduit. Very spiritual indeed. It's as if I am in a trance. In the words of Ace Ventura I can achieve "intergalactic oneness" Lol.

Oftentimes, I try to channel an older cousin of mine who tragically passed away when I was still very young. He was a bass player. I know it sounds silly in a way, but it's like I'm giving him a chance to play again through me. Probably just my imagination, but it helps me play more passionately when I do.

I think that what is in your heart and on your mind comes through in everything you do. Not just music,...but EVERYTHING!

Honoring the people we love and inspired by and expressing how we feel is what it's all about.
