Music Stands on Stage

Should musicians use a music stand on stage? [results will be displayed after you vote]

Huh?

Jesus dude. You said that YOU learned 40 songs and that it wasn't YOUR job to sing. so you felt that having a stand was stupid.

So I said. ...great you know 40 songs and you don't have to sing. ...sweet gig. ...but you're still two hours short of material.


Why do I even have to explain this? What is wrong with YOUR mind? Comprehension issues?

You know the old joke?

How do you get a guitarist to play quieter? Put music in front of him.
How do you get him to stop? Put notes on it.

Saying that someone is less of a "real musician" because he or she uses a most stand is like saying that someone is not a "real baseball player" because he can hit and throw. Being able to play without reading is a valuable skill and being able to read is a valuable skill. The most versatile "real musicians" can do both.

If you go to a play, you want to see a performance, not people reading their lines. You go to a poetry reading, well... It's called a reading for a reason. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you need to decide what kind of show you're trying to put on. While I am against stands, I would also like to add that it's better than paying money to see someone "rocking out" with their laptop. We are all on TB because we play an actual instrument; let's just hope the coming generations of musicians are actually musicians, regardless of their stand preference.

Mine is a tablet and it's pretty small. To be honest, I don't think anybody noticed.

As for not having time or talent enough to be on stage, I'll just say there are plenty of musicians (and audience members) who would disagree with you. Pit orchestras aren't on stage so they don't count. They're in the pit for a reason.

But if you play in a pop/rock/variety/top 20/soul/funk/R&B band with a music stand you may as well go ahead and slap on some shorts, sandals with black socks or bleach white snaekers, stupid backwards beany hat, and every other awful old unprofessional bass player stereotype while you're at it. It's just awful.

If you don't have time enough or talent enough to learn the songs then (my opinion of course) you don't have time or talent enough to be on stage.

If I ever paid a cover charge and walked in to see some guy dressed like he would on Saturday morning looking through his reading glasses at a music stand I would want my money back so I could go see a band that gives a crap. :thumbsup:

If I am going to pay you, you should be special. You should LOOK dideferential than anyone I'm the audience. And you should be talented enough to warrant being paid..... which means you know the songs BEFORE you show up.

I play only fill in gigs these days. I may play 20 songs in a given show I have never preformed live before. I do keep a chart book just in casE I have a brain far (or the band surprises me with an "alternative arrangement "). But it stays on the floor behind my wedge monitor and the majority of the crowd doesn't ever know it's there. I turn the page with the tip of my shoes.

But if I were a member of a band you can believe there would be no stupid beany hats and no music stands. :cool:

Right. Some guys are talented on bass, but most people learn bass just enough to get by. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's true.

I'm semi confident in my 24yrs of gigging that ill be OK if you don't feel I'm a " real musician". Ill think about you during my 4hr gigs Saturday and Sunday and think. .... man. .. I hope that new guy thinks I'm cool!

You know it's funny this debate and the different opinions. I was watching the DVD of David Foster & Friends where he has all his friends come out and sing the songs he wrote for them. And he has a crapload of sheetmusic on top of his piano. And I'm like 'what does he need that for? Didn't he write those songs?'

By the way guys, this is not so serious that we have to argue about it. It's just opinions. Use whatever works for you! Bring it down 1000!

Of course we have to argue about it. If we didn't waste our time with arguing we would have too much free time for practice.

The heat came mainly frm guys who do use stands. Maybe they feel guilty about it.....
Ea to their own, but dont climb down someone s throat becoz of their opinion.
