Musical Ideas from outside the Bass Circle.

Iv'e played music for over 55 years and bass for over 25 years.

Most of my effort to improve on the bass comes from ideas from piano, horn and drum players.

It's always worth it to check out any kind of music you can get your hands (or ears) on. Once something grabs your attention, try doing it on bass, or find a why that your bass can be a part of that music.
Studying Jazz is important. While it is very strongly a amalgam of Euro and African traditions, the general attitude in jazz is welcoming to all styles and eras. So, once you have your mind in a jazz frame of mind, you can add in just about anything else that comes to your attention.
There aren't any rules other than make a glorious sound.

I remember seeing a lady harpist playing a large pedal harp on TV, and the bass line was off the hook.

I heard someone say that trombone music is a great source to mine for bass practice, the instruments' ranges being smilar.

So I went poking around YouTube, found this and just.. fell in absolute love with this tune.

Grabbed J. J. Johnson's exercises and etudes for the jazz instrumentalist (bass edition)
but I haven't reached it yet. Still have some Ariane Cap, Jeff Berlin and Janek Gwizdala stuff to digest first.

I'd guess the trombone version would be most easily transferrable to the bass guitar range?
