If it's cutting in and out, it's probably the 3 way switch.
It can be positioned wrong, or have something preventing the contact points from touching.

Guess it must be the ground wire. If it is, that's pretty easy to fix.
I've got two of those basses and they're both pretty quiet. So far, so good.
About the JMJ - probably good to wait a while on it, to see if people report
problems with it.

Nope it isn't the groundwire.

I like this bass very much but I don't know this noise is something I can live with.

Maybe try and return it, or exchange it for another one.
I've got two of them. They're both quiet.
But I had to take them both apart to straighten out the switches cutting in and out.
Both of them had saw dust shavings in the cavities.
Took a pic, but I don't think you can tell too much from it:

i've played several mustangs at guitar centers in the last three months, and i bought one. none of them were noisy, the switch worked on all of them. i know there are some out there with those issues, but if you get one with a problem, you can always exchange it if you buy from a reputable seller.
I have a local GC with a noisy sonic blue one that they cannot get rid of. They ordered a white one in and i jammed on it and its not noisy at all. The cheapest part of
Cheapest part of those basses is the 3 way selector switch and sometimes they come pretty crummy from the factory. I had a ate at that was always a little noisy and my brother told me to swap out the 5 way selector for a new one, so I swapped it and the moodiness stopped. I'm banking on the switch.
Shielding is cheap. It would be like throwing away an $800 bass that you loved the look, sound and feel of because of a scratchy pot — just get a new $5 pot and enjoy.
For shielding, you can get copper tape from your local garden supply shop — gardeners use it to ward off slugs. Costs a couple of bucks

Pretty weird diagram! The D/G half of the P pickup is labeled "Bridge Pickup" [Fender-speak?] and the J pickup is nowhere in sight, although the bottom white wire to the 3-way switch must be coming from it. There's no connection shown from the common (middle) white wire on the switch to the volume pot. My tone pot acts as a volume pot when the volume pot is turned down more than 1/3. Need to look into this!
