I just stick mine in a normal bass gig bag.
Its a little short, but still perfectly protected.

i can confirm that the Squier VM is a LOT of bass for not much money.

Another vote for the Squier VM. It's bona fide and ready to ride.

EDIT: Just to add -- I just bought the VM Stratocaster, and it's almost even better for the bucks than the Mustang. A great line from what I've seen.

Find a good used vintage Mustang like my 69. It really has old school Fender thump in a short scale.
