My ACG Recurve SC Stype

So I've been pretty much playing my ACG at every opportunity. I took it to band practice. I usually use a fretless on a couple of songs and we have a few songs droptuned. So I usually bring 3 basses to practices and shows. I used it at church for our Sunday service.

The drummer at church said that thing is powerful!!! The drummer in my band said it is a sexy beast that sounds great to boot!!!

I agree with both of them! The DFM pre makes it easy to dial in the right tone on the fly if necessary. My bedroom tone worked perfectly at band practice. At church I had to dial it in a bit.

This bass is a dream to play. The flat radiused fingered board and asymmetrical neck is getting more and more comfortable the more I play it. It seems very natural. I'm loving this bass! It is right up there with my Wal in sound and craftsmanship.

The looks of this bass speak for themselves. It is absolutely gorgeous and stunning! The pics don't do it justice!!!

Alan was great during this whole process. The phrase undersell and over deliver applies here. He was very thorough and communicated throughout the whole process. He explained the options and the pros and cons. I would highly recommend dealing with Alan if you are looking for a custom built instrument. His prices are fair and the craftsmanship is outstanding! His quote was right on too!!!

My ACG has arrived!!! The picture doesn't do it justice. I got it yesterday afternoon. The duty tax was just over $200 and it arrived via UPS in 2 days!!!


The preamp wasn't very hard to dial in. It could have been easier if I had fully comprehended the online manual. Once I got it I had it sounding stellar at home. I will report back after a comprehensive field test.

I will post a full review soon. I'm going to take it to band practice Saturday and will bring it to service on Sunday. I'm really looking forward to putting it through its paces.

Whoa. What a stunner. Count me jealous!

One of these days I'll get an ACG with the DFM and MC pickups. Nothing against my current Harlot, but that electronics package really is something else.

Since this is the latest ACG thread, I thought I would post my questions here. I am very interested in these basses. The one thing that perplexes me is the zero radius fingerboard. His other options are nearly as flat. Can someone comment on how that works out? How does that effect your choices in other neck parameters?

The zero radius fingerboard is something that raises a lot of questions. It is a fabulous way of making a fingerboard that feels great to me. I had previously owned an ACG Harlot S Type (the very first one) that was a four string with an asymmetric neck and zero radius board. The asymmetrical carve on the neck was brilliant, putting the 'meat' of the wood where you wanted it beneath the bass strings whilst facilitating easier reach of the treble strings. In truth, it looked more dramatic than it felt. It had a very natural feel which combined with the soft satin neck finish made the whole thing a breeze to play. Flat boards are another thing I really love. My Bogart Blackstone 5 string has a flat board and 19mm spacing and is a very fast player. To me, a wide and flat neck with a flat board is the most natural feeling way of making an instrument.

As it happens, I had found this thread this morning looking for pictures of the Recurve S because I am currently in the process of choosing my specification for a Recurve 6 of my own. Having broadly settled on the key choices and following some discussion with Alan, he has come back with a very agreeable price. Now starts the process of saving.
