I played my monthly duo gig at The Empress Room last night with the amazingly talented Court Stewart on piano. I have tried about every combination of gear I own on that gig in the never ending search for the 'perfect sound.'

I have been futzing in my studio lately trying a number of different things and decided to go Simple last night. My Shen Gemunder > Lifeline PU > GB Shuttle 3.0 > MAS 26 speaker about 2 feet above the ground on an amp stand. NO PRE-AMP last night. I had the knobs set fairly flat but I engaged BOTH the mid-scoop and the bass boost on the little Genz.

I've never enjoyed a richer - phatter sound than I got last night. The bass was even and rich across the entire range and the LOW NOTES, in particular were AWESOME. The open E string was killin. I just can't believe I'm getting all that beautiful sound out of 2 6 inch and 2 3 inch speakers. It was a slice of heaven.

They're surprising little switches at times. More than just an EQ, they change the texture of your sound. Bass boost & Hi Boost complements a P bass very nicely too.


Side note:
The Genz Shuttles take pedals rather nicely too, never liked it with my Rob Allen Mouse even with those preset switches until I put an Aguilar Agro in the signal chain:
slight OD = comp,
Contour (cuts mids @900Hz),
& tamed the boomy lows (HPF @45Hz).

Hi Nathan, I should probably qualify that by saying 'My Bass Only Better' ON THE GIG. I don't think I have ever had a gig where my unamplified acoustic sound was preferable to a really GOOD amplified sound.

However, I had a rehearsal in a living room today with 2 acoustic guitars, trumper, vocalist, and my bass. It was absolutely wonderful. And I will admit right here and now that it sounded better than any gig I've ever been on. Unfortunately, that volume level only seems sufficient for a living room setting (don't even start talking about drummers).

If I could just get a bunch of 'Living Room Concert' gigs I could leave all my gear (other than my bass) at home. That would be sweet.

I did a weekend recently of living room gigs. Two private parties. Just piano and bass. As the pianist was counting the tip money from one of the gigs I asked how much we got tipped. His response? "I don't know. I'm not done counting the twenties."

THAT'S what I like to hear after a gig!
