Let me start by saying that this is only the best solution I have come up with so far. There are, I'm sure, simpler rigs out there for this application. I just happen to love aspects of two distinct preamps and was not willing to compromise, so I ended up with this solution to the following problem.
I play all kinds of gigs. Loud, quiet, unamplified and louder than hell. I play both electric and double bass, sometimes in the same set. I hate having to have 2 rigs, both for the load in as well as deciding exactly what I will need any given night.
I usually use a Demeter pre through my Stewart power amp for the electric stuff, most often into a 1x12 cab.
Just acquired a rane ap-13 for the double bass. Have a few different mics and a Upton rev solo II that I have been running through that, into the power amp, into the 1x12.
Just threw it all into the same rack with an ab box splitting between the output of the Demeter and the output of the Rane.
Now I can switch between the double bass through the Rane and the electric bass (an Elrick) through the Demeter, into the power and then into the 1x12 and still retain the characteristics that I prefer of both setups. The double bass sounds great with the features of the Rane but is too low end heavy and hard to control through the Demeter. The electric just flat out doesn't sound right through the Rane. Plus, I don't need to do any pre gig rack swapping if on Friday I play a loud rock or blues gig, Saturday is quieter jazz and Sunday is louder mix of both the electric and the acoustic. Now I just need to find a better ab box and I will be done. Whew
